Maharashtra scraps the one-year MBBS bond service
Maharashtra has abolished the mandatory one-year MBBS bond service, through a Government Resolution issued on 23 July 2026. Graduates who have not yet been allotted bond service, or were allotted a posting but never joined, no longer have to serve it. The order is from the state’s Medical Education Department and takes effect immediately; the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) is shutting its online portal for bond-service allotment, and no fresh allotments will be made.

Who is exempt from the MBBS bond and who must still serve
The relief depends on where you were in the bond cycle on the date the GR was issued.
- Exempt: graduates not yet allotted bond service; those allotted a posting but who never joined; and those who could not complete the remaining part of their service.
- Still bound: graduates who had already started their bond and joined their posting before the GR was issued must complete the remaining tenure.
Watch Out: Penalty amounts already paid to exit the bond earlier are not being refunded. If you bought out your bond before 23 July 2026, that money does not come back.
Why Maharashtra dropped the bond
The government’s stated reason is a mismatch between graduates and posts. The number of medical colleges and MBBS graduates in Maharashtra has risen sharply over the years, while sanctioned posts for bond service stayed limited.
