The Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category provides a 10% reservation in Maharashtra government, government-aided, corporation, and private unaided institutions (excluding minority institutions). EWS is available to candidates from the general/unreserved category whose family's gross annual income is below Rs 8 lakh per annum (as per the latest state government notification). Candidates must obtain an EWS Eligibility Certificate in the prescribed State Government format only (Central Government format certificates are not accepted). The certificate must be issued for the current financial year by the appropriate district authority. EWS also excludes families who own agricultural land of 5 acres or more, a residential flat of 1,000 sq ft or more, a residential plot of 100 sq yards or more in notified municipalities, or a residential plot of 200 sq yards or more elsewhere. EWS reservation is separate from the 50% backward class reservation and was introduced following the 103rd Constitutional Amendment. Vacant EWS seats revert to the general category merit list.
